Copying Buffett Without Buffett’s Levers

Permanent capital, insurance float, a multi-decade horizon and no redemptions are part of the method. Most readers do not have them. Copying the slogans without the structure is not the same investment.

Buffett is the most-copied investor in the world and one of the least-copied in practice. The letters are public. The structure that makes the letters possible is not.

What the method rests on

  • Permanent capital. The early partnership could be wound up by him. Berkshire is a corporation with retained earnings and no open-ended redemption mechanism. Most fund managers and most individuals face a different constraint.
  • Insurance float. Premiums collected before claims are paid create a low-cost funding source when underwriting is disciplined. Float is not free money, and it is not available to a retail brokerage account.
  • Horizon. Decades, not quarters. The patience horizon required is longer than most investors, and most funds, can sustain.
  • Bandwidth and judgement. A small number of large decisions, with the ability to do nothing for long periods. That is a skill and a temperament, not a slogan.

The 1989 shareholder letter is clear on the distinction between business value (future cash flows) and accounting book value, and on the price paid for a quality business. It is a statement about how he thinks. It is not a transferable edge for someone whose capital can be called, whose job depends on relative performance, or who needs the money in five years.

What usually gets copied

The visible parts: buy good businesses, hold them, ignore the noise. The invisible parts stay behind: the funding structure, the ability to size a position without a redemption window, the right to wait out a decade of underperformance without explaining it to a committee. Remove those and the same words describe a different, riskier activity.

What was knowable

Berkshire’s structure and the role of float are disclosed in the annual reports and letters. The 2024 report is a historical disclosure; it is not a claim about the balance sheet on any later date. Insurance float is not described here as guaranteed free money.

What to do with this

List the four structural advantages above. Mark which ones you have. If the answer is none, the method you are considering is not Buffett’s. It may still be a good method for you. It is a different one.
