ASX and Overseas Markets: Currency, Trading Hours and Administration

Buying overseas adds an operating system as well as an investment. Currency, session rules, custody and records can matter as much as the ticker.

The same company can arrive through different routes

Direct foreign shares, a locally listed global fund and a depositary receipt can provide related economic exposure with different administration. Identify the actual security and legal structure before comparing prices.

An Australian-dollar trading price does not prove the underlying currency exposure is hedged. A global fund can trade locally while holding assets whose values change with exchange rates.

Separate the asset return from the currency return

Suppose, hypothetically, you buy a US$100 holding when A$1 buys US$0.70. The holding costs about A$142.86. If its US-dollar value stays at US$100 and A$1 later buys US$0.65, it is worth about A$153.85 before conversion costs. That is roughly a 7.69% Australian-dollar gain despite no asset-price change.

If the Australian dollar strengthens instead, the conversion effect works the other way. Use the correct quote direction: divide the foreign amount by foreign currency per Australian dollar. Fees and conversion spreads reduce what reaches the account.

A local clock does not run the foreign exchange

Trading hours depend on the venue, holidays and daylight-saving changes in both places. A remembered Sydney start time can be wrong during the weeks when clocks change on different dates.

Check the exchange calendar and the broker’s session settings for the specific order. Extended-hours trading can have different liquidity and order rules. An order labelled “day” may refer to the foreign market’s trading day, rather than your local calendar day.

Time horizon does not remove overnight event risk. If you cannot monitor an active method during its decision window, that is a bandwidth constraint to acknowledge before starting.

Check the account machinery

Establish who holds the security, whether it transfers to another broker, when sales settle and how quickly cash can be withdrawn. Check currency balances, conversion charges and whether the broker automatically converts distributions.

Voting, corporate-action access and small residual holdings may work differently from local shares. A familiar interface can hide unfamiliar legal terms.

Tax reporting is a separate job

Australian tax residents generally need to account for assessable foreign investment income even when foreign tax has been withheld. Residency exceptions and foreign-income tax offsets require current ATO guidance; an overseas deduction does not automatically settle the Australian position.

Retain purchase and sale confirmations, distributions, withholding details, fees and the exchange-rate evidence used in calculations. A broker’s foreign-currency profit figure may not equal the taxable Australian-dollar result.

What to do with this

Before adding a foreign market, complete a one-page operating note covering currency, sessions, order expiry, custody, settlement and tax records. Test the unanswered points with your provider.
